Your new intranet: 4 things to consider before you decide to build or buy
Congratulations! After months of discussion, you have an agreement from the board that your company needs an intranet. No doubt you have a list of functional requirements it should be able to perform. You know that an intranet will be a reasonable investment so you want to make sure you get as much as possible for your money and resources.
The question you now face is should you build or buy, but how do you decide?
There are upsides to building an intranet in-house. The main one is you’ll be able to get exactly what you want. You have complete control over what you build, can configure it to meet your needs exactly and better still, you can ensure it fully integrates with all your other systems.
Sounds great huh? Where do you sign up, I hear you cry!
But slow down for a moment. There are a lot of ifs and buts with DIY intranet building so buying an intranet might be a better solution.

1. Time, money and resources
The biggest issue with full control is that it comes with a very high price tag mostly in terms of time and resources. Building an intranet platform is not going to happen overnight and you need to consider what you are trying to achieve and the resources you have available. Do you even have someone in your business who is up to the job and does that person have the time to devote themselves full-time to your intranet for the duration of the project and beyond?
Chances are no, therefore you’ll need to either recruit someone with the right skills or someone to replace the day to day tasks of the person you already have.
